The Waverley-Guerin Academy
The young woman stared glassy-eyed into the light¸ oblivious to her surroundings. The figures watching from the other side of a two-way mirror knew exactly what was going through her mind.
"Baronet Dania Selaar¸ sole heir to the Selaar conglomerate¸" Suresh reported dryly from an open file. "Reported by her parents to have a..." he adjusted his glasses "...bit of a rebellious streak. Malleability scale four-point-five."
Headmistress Aelani Jarett kept her gaze focused coolly on the still figure in the next room. "How long until she's ready?" she asked neither man in particular.
"Another week¸ Headmistress¸" Dr. Vyne answered dutifully. "That rebellious streak Mr. Suresh mentioned is complicating the process."
Jarrett kept her gaze on Baronet Selaar. "Three days¸" she said simply.
Vyne looked shocked. "Headmistress¸ we can't rush this one. Although she's responding to the process¸ any pushing we do will undo months of work. We're lucky we got her this far without..."
Then Vyne noticed the look of frosty contempt. His protest died in his throat. Behind Jarrett¸ Suresh shifted uneasily.
"Three days¸" she repeated¸ carefully and evenly.
A chastened Vyne wordlessly nodded assent. The Headmistress turned and walked briskly away¸ Suresh hurrying to keep up.
