Product History
"The Forge of Fury" by Richard Baker was the second adventure module published by Wizards of the Coast for 3rd edition Dungeons & Dragons. It follows "The Sunless Citadel" in a loosely linked eight-adventure series. The adventure is primarily a site-based dungeon crawl in the dwarven fortress of Khundrukar. Lured by legends of extraordinary blades made long ago by an extraordinary dwarven smith¸ the 3rd-level player characters arrive at the stronghold ruins and face tribes of goblins¸ orcs¸ and other monsters. It's a fun¸ solid adventure that has likely killed an appalling number of PCs.
Crawling the Dungeon. In 2004¸ "Forge of Fury" was ranked the 12th greatest Dungeons & Dragons adventure of all time by Dungeon Magazine. It distinguishes itself less for truly innovative dungeon and encounter design than it does for providing a good¸ solid¸ old-school adventuring experience. Under the expectation that player characters will be spending most of their time fighting evil instead of recovering in a safe haven¸ the adventure focuses almost completely on the old dwarven stronghold and relegates the nearby base town of Blasingdell to a sidebar.
This is not an adventure that caters to bards who prefer to talk their way out of trouble.
Death Awaits You with Nasty¸ Pointed Teeth. One common criticism of "Forge of Fury" is that it teaches harsh adventuring lessons... through good old-fashioned character death.
The main entrance to Khundrukar requires movement past manned arrow slits¸ along with a clever defensive fortification that makes frontal assaults a very bad idea indeed. Encounters throughout the fortress reinforce this design approach¸ including one notable room that has gone down in gamer legend as a reminder that not every fight is a fair one: The unexpected CR 10 monster (in a 3rd-level dungeon!) is more than likely to catch adventurers by surprise. Should they survive¸ the low-level group is likely to remember that deadly high-level monsters can be encountered in unexpected places.
Second of Eight. This adventure for 3rd-level characters is the second in an adventure path that also includes the following titles¸ in order by level
- The Sunless Citadel
- The Forge of Fury
- The Speaker in Dreams
- The Standing Stone
- Heart of Nightfang Spire
- Deep Horizon
- Lord of the Iron Fortress
- Bastion of Broken Souls
