We were greeted by an elderly man. He was obviously well respected in the area. Many villagers greeted him¸ and ladies bowed to him. But the exchanges remained cold and the glances sombre. Carter and I suspected that it wasn't his magnificent apple crop that had earned him such notoriety. But that stormy night¸ startled by a hoarse growl that seemed to come from the depths of the earth¸ we entered his dark cellar... and understood...
