Das Aetherium-Rollenspiel ist ein Tabletop-Rollenspiel¸ das in einer Cyberpunk-Zukunft spielt und leicht verständliche Regeln bietet¸ die Kreativität und Storytelling in den Vordergrund stellen.Die materielle Welt - bekannt als der Meatspace - befindet sich seit über hundert Jahren im langsamen Niedergang. Armut ist weit verbreitet - zum Teil aufgrund von Ressourcenknappheit. Kriege¸ Klimawandel¸ Gier und Korruption haben jeden sinnvollen Fortschritt verhindert. Die Entdeckung des Aetheriums - einer quasi-digitalen Bewusstseinslandschaft - führte zu einer Massenflucht des menschlichen Bewusstseins aus dem Meatspace in diese neue Welt.
Im Aetherium ist Knappheit künstlich. Soziale und wirtschaftliche Mobilität sind wieder möglich - angetrieben von der gewaltigen Wirtschaftskraft dieser Cyberdimension. Der menschliche Geist ist in der Lage¸ die Realität nach seinen Wünschen zu formen.
Vorausgesetzt¸ es bedarf genügend Geschick und Willen. Selbst die Zeit vergeht anders¸ wenn man eingeloggt ist - so können Menschen Hunderte von Jahren erleben¸ während ihr Fleisch langsam durch Vernachlässigung verfällt.
Natürlich ist der strahlende Hoffnungsschimmer¸ den das Ätherium darstellt¸ allzu oft nur oberflächlich. Die erforschten und kolonisierten Gebiete werden von Regierungen und Großkonzernen kontrolliert. Trotz der digitalen Natur der Welt bedeutet die neuronale Schnittstelle des Körpers¸ dass der Geist einer Person gefährdet ist - was das Ätherium nur teilweise sicher macht.

Das Ätherium-Rollenspielsystem verwendet für die meisten Dinge einen einfachen W10-Würfelpool - man versucht¸ eine Anzahl von Erfolgen zu erzielen¸ die dem Schwierigkeitsgrad der Aufgabe entspricht. Das System eröffnet in den Programm- und Hacking-Regeln Welten voller Möglichkeiten.
Die gesamte Ätherwelt besteht aus Programmen... Die Programme folgen einer Grundstruktur und Vorlage. Spieler können dies nutzen¸ um ihre eigenen Programme (in der Regel Ausrüstung für die Spieler) zu erstellen und diese an ihre Bedürfnisse anzupassen.
Die Hacking-Regeln erlauben es Spielern¸ Programme spontan zu erstellen oder zu modifizieren und so die Welt nach Bedarf zu verändern. Dies geschieht mithilfe von speziellen W12-Würfeln (es gibt einfache Umrechnungstabellen für reguläre W12-Würfel¸ falls Sie keine speziellen Würfel besitzen)¸ die einem Spieler eine gewisse¸ aber nicht die vollständige Kontrolle über seine Modifikationen geben. Seien Sie jedoch vorsichtig¸ da jeder Hack temporär ist und verschwinden kann¸ bevor Ihre Aufgabe abgeschlossen ist.
Das Buch selbst umfasst 256 wunderschön gestaltete Seiten voller lebendiger Illustrationen. Es enthält alle Regeln¸ die Spieler (und der Spielleiter) zum Spielen benötigen. einschließlich zweier miteinander verbundener Startabenteuer¸ um den Spielern einen ersten Eindruck von der Welt zu vermitteln.

The material world¸ known as the Meatspace¸ has been slowly collapsing for over a hundred years. Poverty is widespread¸ due in part to resource scarcity. Wars¸ climate change¸ greed¸ and corruption have stood in the way of any meaningful progress. The discovery of the Aetherium¸ a quasi-digital mindscape¸ led to a mass exodus of the human consciousness from the Meatspace to this new frontier.
In the Aetherium¸ scarcity is artificial. Social and economic mobility are again possible¸ driven by the massive economic engine of this cyber-dimension. The human mind is capable of bending the reality to its desire¸ given enough skill and desire. Even time passes differently while logged in¸ allowing people to live hundreds of experienced years as their Meat slowly decays from neglect.
Of course¸ the shining beacon of hope that the Aetherium represents is all too often only skin deep. The explored and colonized areas are controlled by controlling governments and massive corporations. Despite the digital nature of the world¸ the neural interface of a person's rig means that their mind is at risk¸ making the Aetherium only partially safe.

The Aetherium RPG game system uses a simple d10 dice pool mechanic for most things¸ where you're trying to get a number of successes equal to the difficulty of the task. The system begins to open up worlds of possibility in the Programs and Hacking rules.
The entire Aetherial world is made up of Programs¸ which follow a basic structure and template. Players can take advantage of this to create their own Programs (generally equipment for the players)¸ customizing things to suit their needs.
The Hacking rules allow players to create or modify Programs on the fly¸ altering the world as they need. This is done through custom d12s (there are easy conversion charts for regular d12s if you don't have the custom dice) that give a player some¸ but not total¸ control over their modifications. Be careful¸ though¸ as any Hack is temporary and might disappear before your task is complete.

The book itself is a beautifully laid out 256 pages full of vibrant artwork. It contains all the rules players (and the GM) need to play the game¸ including two interconnected starting adventures to get players a feel for the world.
