The Donets Triangle: Operation Roland at Kursk 1943
By July 13th¸ the German offensive at Kursk in 1943 had reached a stalemate. The 2nd SS Corps had crawled to within a few miles of Prokhorvka at great loss. Neither side had the strength to defeat the other. The strongest of the SS Corps' was the 2nd SS Das Reich which defended the flank of the spearhead. This flank was a result of the 3rd Panzer Corps' failure with its three panzer divisions to take the Donets Triangle¸ a series of rivers forming a V-shape. This resulted in a 10 mile gap between the 2SS Corps and the 3rd Pz Corps.
Operation Roland¸ stage 1¸ was to attack with both Corps to encircle and destroy part of the Russian 69th Army that held it. Stage 2¸ would have the 1SS resuming their attack to the town IF the 2SS seized Pravorot¸ together it was hoped to force the Russians to collapse and allow the Germans to advance to Oboyan. The 3rd PzC would join and defend the east flank of the SS Corps. Stage 1 was a success¸ Stage 2 was not.
