Angriffsziel Ponyri¸ Kursk 1943
This is the most detailed game covering the epic northern Kursk prong to seize Ponyri during the Kursk offensive. The game covers the carnage that began for both sides on July 7-9 after the Germans had broken through the 2nd defensive belt. The battle saw both sides their heavy armor: for the Germans¸ they were the Ferdinand¸ Tiger¸ and Brummbar. For the Russians¸ their new Beast killer¸ the SU-152¸ and KV1¸ T-34. While the 3rd defensive belt was thinner¸ it still was armed to the teeth with antitank weapons. Both sides fought the other to death and after the 7th¸ the town of Ponyri was still contested. On the 8th¸ the Russians sent in their 3rd Tank Corps putting the Germans on the defensive. When the Germans resumed on the 9th¸ it was like hitting a wall of steel.
Each hex is 300 yds. Each turn 3-4 hrs. Units are companybattalion. Over 300 counters¸ one 11x17" map. Game length is 10 turns. This is a tactical game with units and AFV having their own firepower rating at different ranges and armor strengths (front¸ side¸ rear). Included are air units like the Stuka. Random events may change everything in the battle while artillery¸ both off and on board remains the Queen of the Battlefield! Movement is slow going capturing the grind that this battle was at high loss. The Germans have the 18 Pz¸ 292¸ 86 to advance a mile or two¸ while the Russian seem to have endless units to toss in.
