Madagascar 1942
![]() |
MADAGASCAR 1942 is a solitaire¸ operational game depicting the historical British invasion of Madagascar--held by Vichy French forces--in World War II. Playing the British¸ your job is to match or surpass the accomplishments of the original campaign.
Though a secondary theater during the Second World War¸ the Indian Ocean was a key component in Great Britain's strategic position. While mostly focused on India¸ the threat of Japanese expansion in the entire region was of concern¸ especially by sea¸ and especially after Japan's threat against Ceylon. If they pushed west far enough¸ the threat existed that Japanese submarines might make use of the deep harbor at Diego Suarez in Madagascar¸ off the eastern coast of Africa. Such a base could have profound effect on allied supply routes in the region. The island itself was held by Vichy French forces¸ but what if the Japanese availed themselves of the island and its strategic location? The British decided to launch a strike at the island to preclude such a development. In early May¸ 1942¸ the invasion was ready to unfold. Two British brigades were given the task to capture Diego Suarez and neutralize local defending units. The actual campaign to capture the harbor was successfully accomplished in three short days. Can you match the historical results of the British invasion?
MADAGASCAR 1942 3rd edition is a PDF that includes a map¸ set of unit counters¸ game tables¸ and standard and otional rules¸ specifically designed for solitaire play. As with all Minden designs¸ playability and historicity are emphasized. You will need a six-sided die. Scales: One hex on the map represents about three miles across. Each game turn represents 12 hours. Each unit counter represents a battalion or equivalent. You handle the British land and naval forces¸ the games system handles the French reaction.
This brand-new 3rd edition is similar to that published in Panzerschreck Anthology¸ except with color components¸ additional optional rules¸ and expanded Designer's Notes and design rationale section. Designed by Gary Graber. Published by Minden Games.
