A greedy king. A sunken castle buried underground. Dead who walk hallways of unheard secrets.
Sorrowful songs are sung of the greedy king who built a throne room of gold. The keep of Shimmerstone¸ placed atop the richest gold mines in the continent¸ was home to Shalvek¸ the Golden King. His goldthirst turned his people into slaves¸ forsaking crops and streams for mining. Shalvek's greed forced his miners to carve nearly everything below the castle¸ searching for every single nugget of gold that could be mined. Stories of the king's rule spread far and wide¸ as do all golden tales.
A soothsayer paid him a visit¸ asking Shalvek to change his ways and accept the patronage of the traveler's deity. Shalvek laughed at the man and had him executed in his throne room as a sign to those who would dare try to turn his heart. Only stories and rumours tell what happened on the day of his execution¸ but nearby towns swear to have seen a beam of light shoot down from far above the sky. An earthquake accompanied this¸ and the keep and all of the king's lands disappeared beneath the ground.
Travelers will swear to have heard the moans of Shalvek's people coming from far below the ground¸ awake and moving nearly a century after their lives should have ended...
