Kappa's Keep
![]() |
This is my first one-shot that I completed that accompanies a long campaign being written called the Yokai of Heian-Kyo. This is for up to 5 players level 9-11¸ and includes two new spells¸ creature stat blocks¸ and some basic hooks.
This one-shot is made as a stand-alone one-shot adventure at your FLGS in a few hours. The full campaign is currently being finished.
Defeating the Kappa-Japanese Folklore according to Bavid Dowie: The kappa¸ my dear friends¸ possess a couple of quirks you can exploit with grace and charm. Firstly¸ its power wanes if its water bowl runs dry¸ and secondly¸ it's a creature of impeccable politeness. So picture this: if you offer a humble bow¸ the kappa is bound to return the gesture¸ and that¸ my friends¸ is where the magic begins.
You see¸ these kappa have a fondness for challenging folks to sumo bouts¸ and oh¸ they are fierce competitors on land¸ making it a contest one cannot hope to conquer. Yet¸ fret not¸ for before engaging in a sumo tussle¸ a bow is customary¸ and that's when the trick takes hold. The kappa¸ entangled in its own polite customs¸ is compelled to reciprocate the bow¸ leaving it vulnerable and powerless as the water from its crown dish spills away.
Should you find yourself determined to capture and vanquish a kappa your best strategy lies in exploiting its deepest desires. Observe the captivating print before you: the audacious fellow¸ baring his moonlit rear to the river¸ serves as the enticing bait. Yes¸ the very aim is to allure the kappa and ensnare it when it lunges for the man's shirikodama. Should you possess a daring and ¸ dare I say¸ foolhardy companion who's willing to assume such a role¸ do let us know of your extraordinary endeavor and its outcome.
Now allow me to enlighten you with a few more nuggets of wisdom. Kappas harbor an aversion to gourds¸ sesame¸ ginger¸ and iron. Ah¸ but do be mindful¸ my dear seekers of knowledge¸ for the customs surrounding cucumbers and swimming in their presence differ depending on the locale. Some claim it beckons the kappa's wrath¸ while others assure its protective embrace. Thus¸ I implore you¸ consult the locals and heed their counsel before venturing forth on such a peculiar culinary and aquatic expedition.
