Timecraft - Roleplaying in the Universe of The Doctor
Timecraft
Timecraft is inspired by¸ and pays homage to the Universe of Dr Who and all that inhabit it.
Timecraft uses the Free League 'Year Zero Engine¸' you will need to be familiar with the Year Zero Engine to play this game.
(You can of course adapt it to fit another system¸ but it's written for the Year Zero Engine.)
In the game you play Time Masters who traverse the realms of time and space¸ hoping to track down a Rogue Time Master who is causing havoc in the Time-Streams.
You have a Companion or two to keep you grounded on your journeys.
They also help you cope with the 'mundane stuff' that can sometimes drive you to distraction.
Timecraft contains Character Types to allow you to create a character that suits your own vision of a Time Master¸ or perhaps create one that mirrors one of the more famous Time Masters that have graced the Time-Streams.
Key Principles of the game:
The Universe is full of strange and wondrous things - exploring the Universe makes life worth living.
Everyday life is dull - your Companion should take care of the dull stuff.
Most sentient races are worthy of saving - their worst enemy is often themselves.
The journeys of the Time Masters are dangerous: you can die - you will regenerate though¸ so there's that.
The game is played scene by scene - scenes have different purposes¸ pacing and focus. (Respect the focus of the scene.)
The game-world is collaboratively described - building the Universe is everyone's responsibility.
To create the games¸ GMs can either come up with stories and plots of their own¸ inspired by the Whovian tales¸ or they can use some of the episodes as environments in which to run games: they have after all¸ all been visited by the Rogue Time Master and will contain both clues as well as people who need help coping with the aftermath of the Rogue's visit.
Timecraft is best played with a GM and 2-4 players¸ 5 at a push¸ more than that and the scenes become difficult to manage.
If terms like 'whovian' mean nothing to you (oh Vienna!) this will not be the game for you. If they do¸ then this game may scratch an itch to play games based in the universe of you-know-who.
Once again: The game uses the Free League system¸ as allowed under their open game license agreement.
