The ruins appeared like a mirage¸ when the mists of abomination finally began to lift after our breathless flight. Behind us¸ the hunters slowed down-neither the abomination nor the chattering¸ clawing¸ corruption-reeking swarms seemed prepared to leave the milky-white depths of the fog bank.
We did not stop. The broken pyramid before us was as if swallowed by Davokar-sunken and overgrown-yet the irregular opening still appeared as the path to safety and rest. We pushed through the curtain of vegetation¸ lowering ourselves three or four man-lengths down to the floor of the ruin. There we let the fear and corruption fade away; the blackened veins on Oleana's pale cheeks faded as the panic left her gaze.
Sunlight streamed in through cracks higher up in the pyramid. The hall was enormous¸ and our eyes were immediately drawn to the pillar in its center-naked dark gray stone carved into strange shapes¸ mesmerizing in its weathered splendor. We had reached halfway to its base and were beginning to make out the insectoid details when Oleana grabbed my upper arm and made me stop.
"Like abominations from the mist
