Temptations: Trade Your Soul for Power with this Dark Subsystem
Temptations Temptations is a subsystem that provides powerful abilities to characters who are willing to risk their reputations¸ bodies¸ and even their souls.
When a mage forges a contract with a devil¸ a rogue bonds with a dark artifact¸ or a noble takes advice from a sinister advisor¸ they encounter temptation: the balance between what power a person might gain and what they give up in the process. This subsystem¸ based on the subsystems in the Gamemastery Guide¸ models this slow but insidious battle of wills for heroes who dabble in dark and otherworldly powers.
In addition to the rules for building and using temptations¸ the book includes six example temptations: CRIMINAL CONTACT: the character forms a connection with a faction of criminals¸ but using their illicit services damages the character's reputation. FORBIDDEN SPELLBOOK: the character discovers a spellbook that amplifies their spellcasting abilities¸ but channeling such raw magical power wreaks havoc on their body. HAUNTED HELM: the character discovers a helmet possessed by the spirit of a legendary warrior¸ but to draw on its knowledge and occult power¸ the character risks being possessed-possibly forever. HELLFIRE BARGAIN: the character forms a pact with a powerful fiend and gains hellish abilities¸ but using those powers burns up their soul and slowly transforms into a fiend. PSYCHIC FUNGUS: the character has become the host of a psionic colony of fungus¸ but the colony spreads through their body as they draw on its psychic powers. UNDEAD HUNGER: the character has become cursed with undead magic¸ making them resistent to the call of the grave but forcing them to consume the vital essence of the living.
