To Blave! Travails of the Tyros
To Blave! Travails of the Tyros is a supplement of high-lethality¸ zero-level gaming within the To Blave! system. The To Blave! rulebook (a separate title) is required to play. Unlike standard To Blave!¸ TotT challenges players to use under-trained¸ unprepared PCs to confront (and likely crumple beneath) overwhelming danger. Players should be eager (and old enough) to deal with the loss of many characters in good humor. Tyros are quick to create¸ but also fall in battle about as fast as chess pieces. To Blave! itself is a rules-light¸ classless Role Playing Game (RPG) derived from KNAVE¸ the brilliant rules toolkit created by Ben Milton. To Blave! is a separate work which contains a fully playable rule set required to play Travails of the Tyros. A tyro is a player character¸ but¸ more importantly¸ a tyro is a novice¸ a hapless beginner¸ and this game is about finding the few tyros who have the skill or luck to survive in a harsh world (and hastily burying those who did not). Much of what is presented here should be playable with Knave or with Old School Revival (OSR) games without major modifications. Still¸ the tyro body count is likely to be quite high. Each player creates 3-5 tyros (whichever number the DM thinks is the best fit) and then throws those tyros into dire calamity up to and including nearly certain death. Travails of the Tyros extends the features of To Blave! which¸ itself¸ inherits many features of Knave from which it was derived. Some of the new features include: Many Zero-Level Extensions to To Blave! Including tyro generation rules¸ Inheritance¸ Birthrights¸ Cantrips¸ and additional Treasure¸ Magic Items¸ and Practica for tyros and To Blave! characters alike. New Rule Options for the DM: Chases¸ Sundry Pursuits¸ Motley Efforts and more ways for PCs to pool resources. Ways to model Skills and Races using existing concepts. Fast to teach¸ easy to run. If you are introducing a group of new players to rules-light or OSR games¸ To Blave! or Knave¸ they can make characters and understand all the rules in minutes. Also Stunts¸ Agility¸ Lockpicking¸ Attacking¸ Casting¸ Hiding... everything is an Ability check. Creative Commons Licensing : Like To Blave!
