Action-Oriented Elementals
What are action-oriented monsters?
Action-Oriented Monsters are a concept introduced in Matt Colville's video of the same name . The main conceit for the design is to create monsters that can hold their own against a party of adventurers by having more to do in each round of combat between actions¸ bonus actions¸ reactions¸ and newly introduced "villain actions." Villain actions are similar to legendary actions¸ but are usually more powerful because only one can be used per round¸ and the actions have a prescribed order to dictate a flow to the combat.
Action-oriented monsters tell more dramatic stories in combat than standard monsters. The plentiful action options give them ample ways to surprise the party¸ keeping the players on their toes¸ and the villain actions create a narrative beat¸ building a sense of rising danger.
This collection of monsters focuses on converting the four basic "Elementals" of the Monster Manual to the action-oriented design¸ as well as introducing an action-oriented wizard who can serve as a boss to the elemental minibosses.
