Mazes Of Rar
MAZES OF RAR
Walking through troll country near dusk¸ Kat noticed a cave entrance up the hillside a ways. Not wishing for any trouble¸ she and her hireling Woodrow tried to tiptoe down the trail but Woodrow kicked a small pile of stones that went clattering down the hill - not a lot of noise but just enough. Cursing his clumsiness¸ she watched as something large came to the mouth of the cave. Kat and Woodrow saw red eyes illuminate a huge bestial-human face. Woodrow gasped. The thing's wide mouth grinned to reveal rows of long jagged teeth. They took a few more steps down the path and noted that the beast was now working itself into a berserker frenzy! It sprang from the cave into the air. The manticore's huge bat wings flapped as it approached.
This book is a complete fantasy role-playing game designed with solo play in mind¸ but it can be played by two or more. MOR is not a narrative choose-your-own-adventure story. It is a table-rolling game though many of the encounters are written in story-like fashion. The heart of the game is thirteen d66 encounter tables. You will need paper¸ pencils¸ 6 and 10-sided dice. There is no mapping. Bookkeeping involves keeping track of turns¸ your items and allies¸ locales visited¸ heroic deeds and so forth. Each character and monster has one main attribute - Hit Points. Other aspects of your character are skill choices¸ gear and a few lucky breaks - because the dice gods can be cruel. Monster encounter balance is designed to be challenging yet fair.
In the game¸ you will wander the Land of Rar¸ encountering other travelers - friend and foe alike. You will fight monsters and enlist the help of others. You will experience events¸ occurrences and happenings in towns¸ cities¸ ruins¸ mazes and hopefully find some treasure for your eventual retirement. The aforementioned mazes were built in ancient times by the Old Sprites¸ Dwarfs and Satyrs as amusements. The massive labyrinth walls dominate the landscape¸ towering over the heads of those who enter.
As you adventure in Rar¸ there are always choices to make. Risks¸ rewards and outcomes of your decisions must always be considered. Monster encounters increase in difficulty as characters improve¸ and the game uses a quick action roll and combat system for difficult actions and battles.
