You and your friends play as a Cadre of the Awakened¸ people whose spark of magic has been inflamed within them. Most people are merely Asleep¸ unaware of the magic around them¸ but dangers loom among them. Necromancers use their powers to strip the souls from the Asleep¸ turning them into Zombies. Zombies look and act like people¸ but only pantomime living¸ hurt them and they act as though they feel pain but¸ in fact¸ feel nothing.
You can restore their humanity and free them from their plight¸ but not everyone succeeds at this¸ and failing is fatal to the Zombie. But even if you succeed¸ doing so inflames the magic within them¸ turning them to Awakened and bringing them into the secret life of wonders and danger. Necromancers kill Awakened on sight¸ as they can free their puppets or become rival Necromancers themselves.
