Familiar Setting Sourcebook
Welcome to Familiar¸ the quirky setting for the Genesys Roleplaying Game by Fantasy Flight Games.
Familiar is a fantasy setting about being a hero who is also an animal. No¸ not a powerful bear or dire badger¸ or anything even remotely threatening. A small¸ cute¸ perhaps furry¸ woodland creature. But these animal heroes have one major distinction from their wild kin: they are familiars¸ touched by a magical bond to a mage. They are blessed with uplifted intelligence¸ arcane hardiness¸ and a few magical tricks; but they are still animals¸ burdened with a lack of thumbs and the conflicting nature of their lingering animal instincts.
The setting of Familiar stands apart due to its intentionally tongue-in-cheek tone. In most fantasy roleplaying games¸ familiars are afterthoughts¸ mere features belonging to a powerful hero. This setting makes those animals the protagonists¸ nowhere near as powerful as a human hero¸ but still thrust into a larger human world¸ using their wits and creativity to succeed.
In Familiar¸ humans are the NPCs; while the standard adventuring party of PCs assumes the roles of familiar animals working together! If the novel prospect of playing with a full party of actual familiar animals struggling to interact in the larger world around them (and the hilarity that can cause) intrigues you¸ then this setting is the right one for you.
This setting guide is over 40 pages long¸ and offers players and GMs all they need to run an entire campaign in the Familiar setting¸ using the Genesys Roleplaying Game. For players¸ this includes ten new animal species archetypes¸ eight new careers¸ new setting-specific skills and talents¸ new and unique rules for magic¸ and new equipment - all designed for familiar characters. This setting guide also includes full-color and printer-friendly character sheets unique to the setting.
