The village the Party is lodged at is under attack¸ raided¸ perhaps by powerful bandits¸ a hostile faction looking for plunder¸ or perhaps lackeys of their own lords for want of coin to finance some political folly. Riches are hauled away¸ captives taken¸ residents slain¸ and the rest burned. The odds are overwhelming¸ with countless raiders who are mostly too preoccupied with their looting to focus on any one threat in particular - there is no defeating the raiders - not here¸ not now. Only survival¸ and saving what can be saved.
