Tahar's footsteps slowed as his eyes were drawn towards the corner of the cantina. It was hard not to stare.
"A beauty¸ isn't she?”
"My apologies - I didn't mean to....”
"Nah¸ don't worry¸ she's worth gawping at!” the old trailblazer grinned.
Tahar glanced around at the other shadowed tables. "Aren't you worried. Just leaving it - her - just leaving her sitting there?”
"Nobody but me can fire her. She's keyed to my DNA. And if anyone stole her? Well. Hunting people. It's what I do.”
Tahar's eyes traced the lines of the weapon. "Custom trigger. And grip.” He nodded approvingly.
"And a thumb's width taken off the stock¸ so she sits just right.” The old man eyed the rifle hanging from Tahar's shoulder. "You understand¸ I see.”
"Ah. Yes. I had a lot of work done on mine. Needs to feel like an extension of me.”
The trailblazer nodded.
"Sonic Scope?” Tahar asked¸ sceptically.
"You ever hunted Ghayb-Shay? You don't see 'em. Y'hear 'em. But you're right. Usually¸ the Wide Spectrum settings are more useful.”
Tahar wondered how much the grizzled trailblazer had invested in such a weapon. And he wondered for how many years it had helped the old man stay alive. "The secret of your success¸ is she?” he smiled.
"Nah¸ lad. Quick wits and humility before the Icons. Those are the real secrets of my success. But... a weapon like this¸ well¸ she helps.”
