Panzer Digest 12
Panzer Digest #12 (Summer 2015) is a wargames magzine that contains two complete games in addition to gaming articles¸ variants¸ scenarios¸ and reviews: MERS-EL-KEBIR 1940¸ a nd ASSAULT AT COLD HARBOR. MERS-EL-KEBIR¸ 1940 is a solitaire (and two-player) strategy wargame simulating the historical battle of Mers-el-Kebir between British and French warships¸ off the coast of North Africa¸ in July¸ 1940. It is tactical level between individually rated battleships and battlecruisers¸ using the Advanced Salvo! game system. It comes with a set of British and French ship counters that took part in the actual engagement¸ a Sea Display Map (representing the sea area around the harbor)¸ and full rules including options and different scenarios. Mers-el-Kebir¸ 1940 is rare among game designs in that may be played equally well by two players and solitaire¸ and if solitaire¸ by the player taking either side. ASSAULT AT COLD HARBOR is a solitaire game simulating part of the Union assault taking place at the Battle of Cold Harbor in Virginia on June 3¸ 1864. It is a solitaire design¸ where the player controls the Union forces¸ and the game system controls the Confederate forces. The object of the game is for the player to initiate a break-through in Kershaw's portion of the Confederate defensive line. In game terms¸ this means controlling one or more victory hexes by the end of the game. Your Union troops stand against long odds in this little game. There are a few tactical considerations to make (it is wise to stack units from the same state together¸ it is wise to avoid marshland when you can¸ it is wise to try and focus on a single victory hex rather than several)¸ but most of the circumstances are out of your control. Assault at Cold Harbor comes with rules (including optional rules)¸ set of 70 USA and CSA unit counters¸ and small hexagon mapsheet. In addition to the games¸ this issue is full of articles and game reviews of interest to wargamers. Game reviews (Robert Smith¸ Review Editor) cover Operation Whirlwind (One Small Step)¸ Blood & Sand (Worthington)¸ The Great Divide (Victory Point Games)¸ Supreme Commander (GMT)¸ Kill Shot (DVG)¸ Battle for Stalingrad (DVG). Also included is a new Volkssturm scenario for Combat Leader (VKS-2)¸ a copy of Salvo! River Plate solitaire WW2 naval game¸ and other boardgame articles. There's a lot of boardgaming content in this digest-sized edition sure to please players¸ whether veteran gamers or new to the hobby¸ so even though published in 2015¸ the content and value of this edition remains strong. Panzer Digest #12 has been out of print¸ and we are pleased to make it available once again in PDF format. Editor and Game Designer: Gary Graber. Published by Minden Games.
