Bretwalda - Core Rules
This simple set of card- and dice-driven "Fast-Play" rules is designed for use in re-fighting battles in Dark Age Europe (5th to 11th Centuries AD)¸ involving small or large numbers of units¸ in a tabletop situation.
The game is meant to be played by two or more players¸ each having control of a 'Guard' (division). The whole Army may comprise of a variable number of units depending upon the size of battle being re-enacted.
In these rules we are more concerned with the overall progression of the battle from a Commanding Officer's viewpoint. Therefore the rules allow for a loose and informal game treatment that can easily be resolved in an evening (two or three hours).
There are also a FREE Roser Sheet and Play Sheet to download. Unfortunately¸ they missed being included in the original body of the rules¸ but available here as separate PDFs.
