Languages can be a lot of fun¸ and a failure to communicate can be a lot more fun if applied in the right way.
My players have often made a point of learning whole languages just so they could have a clandestine conversation within earshot of other members of the party. This has often led other characters to secretly learn languages so they might eavesdrop on those same conversations. While it may be that my players' characters should trust each other more¸ it has led to a lot of entertaining situations and misunderstandings.
So I was a little disappointed to see Second Edition make languages a lot easier¸ with a common language and some very cheap advantages. So¸ in this supplement I make languages a little more difficult again¸ but also¸ a little more fun.
